    Promoting real Life Observations for Gaining Understanding of road user behaviour in Europe

Field trials

In order to demonstrate the potential usefulness of naturalistic observations for research and interventions regarding road safety, a total of five small-scale field trials with various instrumentations will be conducted. These trials also intend to serve as pilot studies for a future large-scale naturalistic study by revealing strengths and weaknesses of the data collected by the various instruments considered, by identifying relevant issues related to implementation and management, by evaluating the collected data in association with safety measures, and by identifying potential problems and gaps in the collected data and the various data reduction and data analysis methods.

The results and insights gained from the field trials serve to define recommendations related to methodology, technology, implementation, data management and transferability, as well as to provide a clearer understanding, based on hands-on experience, of the potential usefulness of these data to the study of various research questions.

The field trials address a large variety of issues in various dimensions:

  • In-vehicle technology versus out-of-vehicle technology
  • Limited versus extended equipment
  • Technology that monitors only vehicle behaviour versus technology that monitors also the environment

Field Trial Austria

The Austrian field trial investigates possible impacts of video-based feedback on learner drivers and identifies driving behaviour patterns among novice drivers.

Thus, the trial helps to identify and evaluate meaningful risk indicators. It also provides data to assess whether the initial and 2nd phase driver training approach has a positive impact on learner driver behaviour by means of a safer driving style, e.g. by making drivers reduce risk margins or in terms of speed choice. A series of interviews or questionnaires (before, during and after the application) provides additional knowledge on the way drivers learn, make experience and interact with the observation/feedback system and with the driving teacher/instructor.

Field Trail Greece

The main objective of the Greek field trial is to investigate long-term effects in driving behaviour by the application of Forward Collision and Lane Deviation Warnings.

A certain number of experienced drivers will drive the instrumented car owned by CERTH/HIT for a whole month in Thessaloniki. Within this month, they will drive the vehicle both with the systems on and off, interchangeably. Both auditory and visual warnings will be provided.  Recorded parameters (log files and video data) will be supplemented by subjective data (diaries, questionnaires, etc.) and compared to baseline assessments.  The estimated impact of the application of ADAS in drivers’ safety will be a direct outcome comparable to other trials.

Field Trial Israel

The Israeli field trial is aimed at documenting, studying and analyzing driving patterns, driving exposure and exposure to risk of young novice drivers.

Several groups of young drivers will be monitored and analyzed, these groups include: young drivers throughout the accompanied driving phase and beginning "solo driving" phase, young drivers with some driving experience, and young drivers belonging to the same community.

The analysis will include: comparison to self reports, evaluation of intervention and relation of extreme driving events to GIS-based location. The used system measures acceleration, speed and position and extracts driving behaviour indicators from these measurements.

Field Trial Netherlands

The field trial in the Netherlands will deal with safety-related interacting behaviour between motorised traffic and vulnerable road users, i.e. bicyclists and pedestrians by reanalysing parts of already collected data.

In the in-vehicle naturalistic observation approach, detailed information can be gathered from the driver and the vehicle, but the information on surrounding traffic and prevailing traffic conditions is limited. A site-based data collection with video cameras installed at specific locations (for example intersections) may complement in-vehicle studies by being able to observe all the traffic passing at a given road location, including vulnerable road users such as bicyclists and pedestrians. In addition to in-vehicle observations, much can be learned from this approach with respect to what is going on at an intersection in the interaction between road users.

Fiel Trial Spain

The aim of the Spanish trial is to attain a naturalistic behaviour of the driver in a “new” car.

Each test person will use the instrumented car for one month and the interest is focused on the effects of using nomadic electronics on driving in order to detect the possible conflicts, incidents and accidents. The instrumented car is equipped with devices to measure different variables: performance variables and videos are taken for a period of time sufficiently long so that the driver forgets he is under close scrutiny. Data are analyzed as soon as possible and verbal reports are recorded as well. The main foreseen result is to achieve a method for testing and improving the safety of electronic devices in vehicles.
